ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE SENATE COMMITTEE ON COMMITTEES January 21, 2003 11:42 a.m. MEMBERS PRESENT Senator Gene Therriault, Chair Senator Ben Stevens Senator Gary Wilken Senator Johnny Ellis Senator Bettye Davis MEMBERS ABSENT All Members Present COMMITTEE CALENDAR Consideration of the Committee on Committees report. ACTION NARRATIVE TAPE 03-1, SIDE A Number 001 CHAIR GENE THERRIAULT called the Senate Committee on Committees meeting to order at 11:42 a.m. All members were present. He announced that each member was provided a copy of the Committee on Committees report containing the suggested make-up of the standing committees. He told members that he discussed his concern about the lack of regional representation of the membership of the standing committees with Senator Ellis and with the majority caucus, particularly on the Senate HESS Committee, which is made up of legislators from urban areas. SENATOR ELLIS acknowledged that the minority caucus specifically discussed the lack of rural representation on the Senate HESS Committee. HHowever, the minority caucus continues to fully support its recommendation to place Senators Guess and Davis on the Senate HESS Committee. CHAIR THERRIAULT informed members that he suggested that Senator Guess serve on the Senate State Affairs Committee, rather than Senator Bettye Davis, in an effort to distribute the workload among members more evenly. He said that suggestion was not meant to be a slight to Senator Davis who has been seated on two other standing committees. If Senator Guess did not serve on the Senate State Affairs Committee, Senator Davis would have served on three committees while Senator Guess would have served on one. SENATOR ELLIS said the minority caucus recommended Senators Davis and Hoffman as members of the Senate State Affairs Committee and maintains that recommendation, although he understands Chair Therriault's point about an even distribution of the workload. SENATOR STEVENS moved to adopt the Committee on Committees report, dated January 21, 2003, which reads as follows: SENATE COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE Senator Wagoner, Chair Senator Austerman Senator Taylor Senator Lincoln Senator Elton SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE Senator Green, Co-Chair Senator Wilken, Co-Chair Senator Austerman Senator Bunde Senator Stevens Senator Hoffman Senator Olson SENATE HEALTH, EDUCATION & SOCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE Senator Dyson, Chair Senator Green Senator Wilken Senator Davis Senator Guess SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE Senator Seekins, Chair Senator Ogan Senator Therriault Senator Ellis Senator French SENATE LABOR AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE Senator Bunde, Chair Senator Austerman Senator Seekins Senator Davis Senator French SENATE RESOURCES COMMITTEE Senator Ogan, Chair Senator Wagoner, Vice-Chair Senator Dyson Senator Seekins Senator Stevens Senator Elton Senator Lincoln SENATE RULES COMMITTEE Senator Cowdery, Chair Senator Stevens Senator Therriault Senator Ellis Senator Guess SENATE STATE AFFAIRS COMMITTEE Senator Taylor, Chair Senator Dyson Senator Cowdery Senator Guess Senator Hoffman SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE Senator Cowdery, Chair Senator Wagoner Senator Therriault Senator Lincoln Senator Olson CHAIR THERRIAULT announced a brief at-ease.
